About

“It’s more than a photographic exhibition of guitars. It’s an archive that not only captures a snapshot in time as each guitar continues to evolve into a unique piece of art, it additionally documents the entwined stories and intimate relationship each artist has with the instrument.”

ABOUT SCALE

Every artist holds a unique, intimate relationship with their instrument. A relationship that ultimately shapes their guitar into a one of a kind piece of art.

Scale was created to reveal the beauty of each instrument while exploring the entwined stories and intimate relationship each artist holds with their instrument. The true to scale images bring the guitar to the forefront allowing the viewer to study its dents, cracks, rust and wear that evolves its character year after year.

For 12 years music photographer Kane Hibberd has travelled the world documenting these guitars that continue to be played everywhere from clubs to stadiums, studios and bedrooms. Whether it’s in front of 5 fans or 50,000 fans, an indie single or multiplatinum album, these guitars are revered by their owners in equal measure.

Hibberd has shot images of guitars belonging to more than 300 players from across the fame spectrum. This compelling photographic journey is underscored with candid stories exploring the intimate relationship between artist and instrument.

The Scale Photographic Exhibition features 100 of these exceptional guitars, photographed front and (rarely seen) back using the same modus operandi – a medium format camera paired with a white background and consistent lighting technique. Each set of images is exquisitely printed at a 1-1 Scale that brings to life the original intent, an awe-inspiring and impactful physical exhibition that has been painstakingly kept offline for over a decade.

The Scale experience is enhanced by the provision of high quality headphones and a free audio guide allowing visitors to hear the stories at their own pace. Short versions narrated by Radio 1’s Dan Carter and detailed longer stories narrated by radio announcer Mel Bampton.
